Where are Drusen deposits typically located?

RPE

Retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)

Drusen form as extracellular deposits right at the interface between the retinal pigment epithelium and Bruch's membrane, i.e., in the subretinal space just under the RPE. That proximity to the RPE explains why the retinal pigment epithelium region is the best match. They are not located in the choroid or in the nerve fiber layer, which are different layers of the eye, so those locations don’t fit the typical drusen location.

Choroid

Nerve fiber layer
